Testimony of a daughter who wanted to offer better to her mother I share this experience with a heavy heart, but with a need for truth. My mother stayed in this residence for six months. I had made the decision to move her elsewhere, to a place I hoped would be more humane, more attentive. The lease was signed. But she died before this change could take place. My family and I all work, I in the North, far from her home. It was with confidence and hope that we chose this residence. We did it because we needed help, a safe place, where she would be accompanied with dignity. It wasn't abandonment; it was an act of love. But what we observed is deeply disturbing. No real activities were offered. We were told that the residents weren't interested. Yet, my family and I were often there. We suggested games, times of sharing... and the residents participated with joy. It wasn't a lack of interest, it was a lack of initiative. The posted activity schedule was just a facade. The attendants were often absent from the floors, sitting alone in the downstairs kitchen. There was virtually no spontaneous interaction with the residents. Human support was absent. My mother's diabetes management was neglected. We had purchased specialized food for her, but no follow-up was done. No one informed us when it was running low. Her blood sugar wasn't monitored at mealtimes, despite what was claimed. One evening, she told me she wasn't feeling well. Her blood sugar was 21 mmol/L. I had to arrange an emergency private appointment. No qualified staff was available for healthcare. Despite the power of attorney and our clear requests to be informed, the residence didn't call us if there was a problem. We were kept out of it. No help with incontinence. We were told she took off her own underwear. Yes, to go to the bathroom, and without help, she was discouraged from putting them back on. This isn't independence; it's abandonment. The CLSC is located right in front of the residence, and yet obtaining services was an obstacle course. The promised cable wasn't activated. Housekeeping wasn't done regularly, etc. Minor details, perhaps, but they reveal a lack of respect. This place is not suitable for vulnerable people. You must be independent, without cognitive impairment, able to identify your needs and ask for what's missing. But don't forget that even clear-headed people can be afraid of disturbing others, or of losing their roof over their heads. Ask your elders. Observe. Don't be fooled by appearances. My mother deserved better. She left before I could offer her that better.

Very nice place for seniors, but more activity items would be better for them.
